Mega Man Dual Override Power Shot System

How Dual Override lets every Special Weapon fire twice, and why Jet Stinger is the clearest example.

Power Shot System

Power Shot is Dual Override’s expansion of the Special Weapon system. Every Special Weapon in the game has two forms: a normal version and a powered version activated with a single button press. Capcom is presenting this as the evolution of the Power Gear concept from Mega Man 11, except now the powered form is always available instead of requiring a meter.

Read this alongside the Special Weapons page for the full weapon list, and alongside the Override system for how Override interacts with Power Shot.

How Power Shot works

In classic Mega Man, selecting a Special Weapon gave you one version of that weapon. You used it or you did not. Dual Override adds a second layer on top: press the Power Shot button and your current Special Weapon fires in its enhanced form.

The demo showed this clearly with Jet Stinger, an aerial rushing attack similar to Pile Driver from Mega Man 11. In normal form, Mega Man rushes forward and stops when he hits an enemy. As a Power Shot, he pierces straight through enemies and keeps going. Enemies hit by the Power Shot version can also be knocked sideways into other enemies.

That single button transforms a single-target move into an area-clear tool. The same logic applies to other weapons: a spread shot becomes a wider spread, a projectile that bounces becomes one that travels further, a shield tool becomes a larger shield.

The button

Power Shot is a single button press, not a meter or a hold. According to hands-on previews, the Power Shot input is separate from the weapon switch and separate from the Custom Action input. Capcom has not published the final button mapping, but the functionality is clear: one press transforms the current weapon.

This is the key difference from Mega Man 11’s Power Gear, which required holding a shoulder button and watching a meter. Power Shot is instant. You decide in the moment whether the normal form or the Power Shot form solves the room.

Power Shot during Override

During Override, Special Weapons can be fired without consuming weapon energy. V Jump’s Gamescom coverage confirmed this interaction: while Override is active, Mega Man does not pay the energy cost for either form of his Special Weapon.

This creates a high-risk, high-reward loop. You activate Override, you fire Power Shot versions of your best weapons for free, you dump the Override gauge into a Final Charge Shot, and then you spend twenty seconds in the overheated vulnerable state. For a boss with a clear weakness, this can end the fight in one cycle. For a room with adds, this can clear it instantly.

Switching away from a Special Weapon during Override ends the Override state regardless of remaining gauge. That means you commit to one weapon for the duration or you eat the hangover early.

Power Shot and the weapon economy

Normal Special Weapon firing costs weapon energy. Power Shot firing also costs weapon energy, at least outside Override. This means Power Shot doubles your effective weapon usage if you use both forms strategically.

The practical question is whether to use the normal form to conserve energy or the Power Shot form to solve the room faster. Classic Mega Man rewarded conserving weapons for the boss. Dual Override’s Power Shot system and the presence of Bolts for a yet-unpublished shop suggest the economy is more flexible.

Until Capcom publishes the 2027 shop and the full weapon list, treat Power Shot as a toggle: normal form for conservation, Power Shot for elimination.

What weapons have been shown

Jet Stinger is the only weapon with confirmed Power Shot details. The demo showed it clearly because the rushing pierce mechanic is visually distinct. Other weapons in the full game will follow the same two-form logic, but Capcom has not published the specific Power Shot versions for each.

The Special Weapons page tracks weapon names as they appear in official materials. Once Capcom reveals more weapons, this page will add Power Shot notes for each one.

Practice before 2027

You cannot practice Power Shot yet, but you can think in two forms. Pick any Mega Man game and ask: what if every weapon had a stronger version I could fire instantly? The answer changes room-by-room decisions. Do you use the normal Shot on theadds and save the Power Shot for the exit? Do you Power Shot through a group and skip the room entirely?

The chip set ranking will matter here too. An attack-focused chip set with auto-charge gives you strong normal shots and a strong Power Shot on separate inputs. A survival chip set may give you a barrier that lets you Power Shot more safely. The interaction between chips and Power Shot is a 2027 question this wiki will answer as soon as Capcom publishes the chip board.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers pulled from Capcom's 2026 previews and official notes.

What is Power Shot?

A second form for every Special Weapon, activated with one button press. Normal form and Power Shot form both exist on the same weapon.

Does Power Shot cost weapon energy?

Yes, in the normal game state. During Override, Special Weapons can be fired without energy cost.

What does Jet Stinger's Power Shot do?

Normal Jet Stinger stops on enemy contact. Power Shot version pierces through enemies and continues, knocking them sideways into others.

Is Power Shot the same as Mega Man 11's Power Gear?

Functionally similar but mechanically different. Power Gear required a meter and a hold. Power Shot is a single instant button press.

Can I use Power Shot during Override?

Yes, and Override also makes Special Weapons free to fire. This creates a high-damage burst window.
