Mega Man Dual Override Special Weapons in Dual Override

The classic boss-steal loop, with Override on top and Custom Chips around it.

Special Weapons

Mega Man Dual Override keeps one of the most reliable systems in the series: defeat a Robot Master, take their weapon, and use it against the next boss on the grid. Capcom has not yet published the full Special Weapon list for the 2027 campaign. What is public, as of Gamescom 2026, is the loop, the Override interaction, and the fact that the Twinkle Girl steal still has no name.

This page is the system primer. If you want the boss-by-boss fight walkthrough, use Beat Twinkle Girl. For chip choice, the chip set ranking is the blunt version. For the grid, the Robot Masters page is the roster.

The loop, unchanged

Defeat a Robot Master. Earn a Special Weapon. Carry it into the next fight. If you have played any classic Mega Man from 2 to 11, the system is identical on a surface read. Dual Override does not pretend to invent around the steal. The story page makes the Robot Exhibition a reason for the Robot Masters to revolt; the gameplay loop is the reason you have eight of them on a select screen.

In the Gamescom demo the loop still worked as expected. The Twinkle Girl area did not require a Special Weapon, because you had no defeated boss to steal from. Once you have a real save in 2027, your starting area will still be the exam where you only have the Mega Buster and your Custom Chip actions. The weapon economy kicks in after your first boss clear.

Override and Special Weapons

Override changes one specific thing about how Special Weapons feel. According to V Jump’s demo coverage, Special Weapons can be fired during Override without spending their weapon energy. That is the key “free use” window of the burst state. Outside Override, every shot draws from the weapon’s ammo pool, and an empty weapon automatically falls back to the buster.

This is not a free lunch. Override lasts a short window and ends with a roughly twenty-second class of weakness. If you spend Override dumping a Special Weapon in a hallway, you will face the next real fight on a depleted weapon bar and an empty gauge. The Override system page goes into the timing. The point on this page is: Special Weapons inside Override feel generous, and that is the design hook Capcom wants you to remember.

Custom Chips and Special Weapons

The demo presets gave you a Custom Action button. In the survival preset, that button was a barrier. In the attack preset, it was a Double Charge Shot. In the no-support preset, it was Rush Coil. The point is that your Custom Action is not a Special Weapon. It is a separate input on a cooldown.

In the shipping game, chips and weapons will overlap in real rooms. The chip you picked at the area door and the weapon you stole from a boss serve different jobs:

  • The chip is your plan. It will help you cross spikes, recharge faster, or buy one safe second against a screen-clear projectile.
  • The weapon is your answer to the next boss weakness chart. The chip will not replace the weakness loop.

This is the reason Custom Chips is its own page and not a subsection of this one. Both layers are real, and the 2027 game will let you mix them.

Twinkle Girl’s steal, still unlisted

The most common question after the Gamescom demo was: what weapon does Twinkle Girl drop? Capcom has not published the answer. Press coverage used the placeholder “Special Weapon” or skipped the topic. The fight guide on this wiki repeats the same restraint. When Capcom names the steal, the Beat Twinkle Girl page will carry it.

This is also the rule for the other seven portraits. Until Capcom names a weapon, the Robot Masters page tracks the silhouettes and the news hub tracks the dates. Do not invent weakness charts from a trailer. Special Weapons in Dual Override are the same way: official names only.

Proto Man and the weapon question

Older Proto Man modes in Mega Man 9 and 10 sometimes restricted which weapons he could use, or coloured them red as a cosmetic flag. Dual Override has not stated whether Proto Man takes a filtered weapon set. Capcom’s official copy describes the two heroes as sharing the same campaign and the same chip system. It does not name Proto Man’s weapon list.

The honest read is shared weapons, with a footnote. The Proto Man guide treats the weapon as an open question and links this page for the loop. When Capcom publishes a pause screen with Proto Man’s weapons, this section will get specific. Until then, plan around a shared list and prepare to be surprised.

How to learn the loop before 2027

You cannot grind Dual Override yet, but you can train the habit. Pick any classic Mega Man and run a full game without dying. Force yourself to defeat the first boss, then save the Special Weapon energy until the second boss. Run the rest of the campaign on the buster as much as you can. That trains the same restraint Dual Override will require: the weapon is a key, not a resource to burn.

A second habit: read the boss intro for the weapon’s name. Classic Mega Man has always named the steal in a moment of fanfare. Dual Override will likely do the same. If you cannot name a weapon by the end of a stage, you have not earned it yet.

What this page is not

  • It is not a weakness chart. The chart does not exist yet.
  • It is not a tier list of Special Weapons. You cannot rank what is unnamed.
  • It is not a substitute for the Override system or Custom Chips guides. Those are the layers that sit on top of this one.
  • It is not a place to argue about whether Mega Man 8 was better. That argument lives elsewhere on the internet.

Pair this page with Getting Started for the campaign loop, the chip set ranking for loadout choices, and the news hub for the next boss reveal. Special Weapons are the spine of the game. The spine is the same. Everything else in Dual Override is the new layer.
