Mega Man Dual Override How to Play Proto Man

DLN.000 returns as a full hero with a shield-led kit Capcom still calls technical.

Proto Man Guide

Proto Man is the second playable character in Mega Man Dual Override, not a costume. Capcom’s official site lists him as DLN.000, the wandering warrior with a yellow scarf, and says he uses his shield to perform a variety of attacks that require a more technical approach. Director Shinya Ikuta told VGC that fans would not accept two skins with one moveset, so Dual Override is building different game elements for each hero.

This page is the practical kit guide. The lore and series history sit on the Proto Man character page. Read both if you are deciding who to main in 2027.

What is confirmed versus what is still coming soon

Confirmed:

  • Proto Man is playable in the full game alongside Mega Man.
  • His kit is shield-forward.
  • Custom Chips and Override apply to both robots in official copy.
  • Trailer audio and later footage teased him before the August 2026 gameplay trailer named him outright.

Still incomplete:

  • Capcom’s playable-character module still shows a coming-soon panel for parts of his kit.
  • No public Gamescom demo let press finish Twinkle Girl as Proto Man the way they did as Mega Man.
  • Damage taken, slide distance, and whether he still eats extra knockback like some older Proto modes are unlisted.

Play him as a specialist you unlock in your own head after Mega Man, not as the default first hour. Getting Started is still the campaign map.

Shield as an attack, not only a wall

Classic Proto Man in Mega Man 9 and 10 used the Proto Shield to eat projectiles from the front while charging the Proto Buster. Dual Override’s marketing goes further: the shield performs a variety of attacks. That language matches trailer flashes where a red-and-grey robot closes distance instead of standing still as a turret.

Until a frame data sheet exists, train the idea rather than a combo list. You will give up Mega Man’s safest full-screen charge in exchange for answers at mid-range. Rooms that punish standing still, including Twinkle Girl’s dash-ins, may actually suit Proto Man once his attacks are public. Rooms that demand long, safe pokes may still prefer Mega Man.

Do not assume the shield makes you invincible. Series Proto modes often take more damage or suffer worse knockback. Dual Override has not repeated those penalties in a patch note because there is no patch note. Keep difficulty options in mind: if Proto is the hard hero, chips are how newer players still finish his campaign.

Dual Override systems on a red helmet

Custom Chips are installed on both heroes. A barrier chip may overlap with shield beats. Rush Coil may feel different if Proto’s jump arc is not Mega Man’s. Hover and rapid-fire will probably be the chips that steal the most from his identity, because they push him back toward Mega Man’s comfortable gun-platformer. If you pick Proto to play Proto, try the no-support preset first when the game ships.

Override should still overclock the robot and then overheat him. Capcom has not shown a Proto-only Final Charge Shot name. Expect the same gauge rules with different animations. Spend Override on bosses, not on proving the scarf looks cool in a hallway.

Special Weapons remain a Mega Man series loop. Whether Proto Man uses the same stolen weapons or a filtered set is unlisted. Older games sometimes restricted his shop or his items. Dual Override has not repeated that restriction. Track it on the news hub rather than copying Mega Man 9 DLC rules.

Who should main Proto Man in 2027

Pick Proto Man if you like positioning puzzles more than raw shot volume. Pick him if you already bounce between Mega Man and Bass-style games. Pick him if the dual-hero pitch is the reason Dual Override exists for you.

Pick Mega Man if you want the trailer to match your hands. The public demo, the Switch 2 footage, and most preview text assume the blue buster. Learn controls on Mega Man, then swap.

Either way, the Robot Master grid does not change. Twinkle Girl still owns fireworks. Replica bosses such as Astro Man R still sit in Area 2. The Robot Masters hub is shared. Dual Override’s title is dual because of two heroes and an Override system, not because the campaign splits into two stories. Official plot text still sends both robots after the Robot Exhibition incident while Dr. Light is away.

When Capcom publishes Proto Man’s move list, this guide will add a table. Until then, treat every thumbnail that shows only Mega Man as incomplete, and wishlist Dual Override so you can check the character select on day one instead of guessing from silhouettes.
