Mega Man Dual Override Custom Chip System

Loadouts you pick before an area, not a second Double Gear meter.

Custom Chips

Custom Chips are Dual Override’s personalization layer. Capcom’s official site says Mega Man and Proto Man can install chips that improve functions: rapid-fire, a protective shield bubble, hover, and more. Director Shinya Ikuta framed chips as the courtesy for a wider audience while still targeting long-time Mega Man fans. If Override is the panic button, chips are the plan you made in the elevator.

Use this page with the chip set ranking and difficulty options. This guide explains the rules. Those pages argue which preset to pick on the only public stage.

Demo presets versus the final board

Hands-on coverage is clear on one warning: the Gamescom chip menu was a demo shortcut. You chose one of three packaged setups, not a free grid of single chips. Capcom still says the shipping game lets you mix individual Custom Chips. Treat everything below as a preview of roles, not a locked shop list.

The three Gamescom configurations were:

Survival-focused. A projectile-blocking barrier plus an E-Tank. Previewers who wanted a fair first look at Twinkle Girl used this when the firework factory started deleting them. The barrier is a Custom Action on a cooldown, not a permanent shield.

Attack-focused. Auto-charging plus Double Charge Shot. You stop holding the charge button for every serious shot, and you can dump two charged shots in a burst. This is the preset that makes Dual Override look like a modern run-and-gun in trailer cuts.

No Chip Support. Closest to traditional Mega Man. Rush, Mega Man’s dog, is available here as a Custom Chip action rather than a default always-on pet. In the demo he behaved like Rush Coil: a trampoline that opens high routes or skips ugly jumps. VGC noted that calling Rush can trivialize some platforming if you want it to.

Custom Actions sat on a shoulder or trigger. Override sat on the opposite shoulder. You cannot mash both personalities at once during the Override hangover; the Override system page explains that lockout.

What Capcom has named in marketing

Outside the demo presets, official copy lists chip ideas rather than a numbered inventory:

  • Rapid-fire for the buster.
  • A protective shield bubble.
  • Hover, which trailer footage uses to cross hazards the old slide cannot save.
  • Instant or assisted charging, which the attack preset already demonstrates.
  • Rush Coil as a selectable support rather than a story-locked item.

That is enough to guess the design intent. Dual Override wants you to solve a room with a tool you equipped, then solve the next Robot Master with a different tool. It is closer to Mega Man 11’s Double Gear philosophy than to Battle Network folders, but the naming is chips because you install them, you do not just flip a gear.

Bolts still exist. V Jump said each of a stage’s three sections hid two collectible Bolts. Capcom has not published a full shop. Do not invent prices. When a shop appears, this page will track whether Bolts buy chips, tank upgrades, or both.

How to pick a chip before you know weaknesses

You will enter Dual Override without a Special Weapon on the first Robot Master. Chips are your only loadout. A practical rule from the demo:

  • New to classic Mega Man? Survival. Learn patterns. Spend the E-Tank on Area 2, which several previews called harder than Twinkle Girl herself.
  • Comfortable with charge shots? Attack. The auto-charge removes the awkward hold that makes first-time players eat projectiles.
  • Practicing for a hardcore run? No Chip Support, and use Rush only to grab Bolts, not to skip the stage. The difficulty options page expands this into a self-imposed ladder.

Once Special Weapons exist in your file, chips should cover whatever the stolen weapon does not. If a weapon is a screen-clear, you may not need attack chips. If a weapon is a utility beam, survival or hover may matter more. Dual Override still expects you to hunt weaknesses; chips do not replace that loop.

Proto Man and chips

Capcom says both heroes can use the Custom Chip system. That does not mean the same chip will feel identical. A barrier in front of Mega Man covers a body that wants to shoot forward. A barrier on Proto Man may overlap with shield beats. Until Capcom shows Proto’s chip screen, assume shared names and different timing. The Proto Man guide is the kit page; this page is the loadout page.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse chips with Override. Chips are chosen on the area door. Override is a gauge you spend inside the stage. Do not save your survival barrier for the credits. Cooldowns exist so you can use the tool twice in a long area. Do not assume Rush is missing from Dual Override because the attack preset hides him; he is gated behind chip choice in the demo.

When more presets or a full chip grid appear, compare them against Twinkle Girl’s three areas first. That route is the only public exam. Then check Getting Started so new players still meet the campaign loop before they min-max a board that is not finished.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers pulled from Capcom's 2026 previews and official notes.

Are Custom Chips the same as Mega Man 11 Double Gear?

No. Double Gear was a toggle during play. Chips are equipped before an area. Override is the in-stage burst that replaced Gear's overclock fantasy.

Can I mix chips in the final game?

Capcom says yes. The Gamescom menu used three packaged presets for the demo only. Watch the news hub for the first look at a real chip board.

Is Rush in Dual Override?

Yes, at least as a Custom Action in the no-support preset. He functioned as Rush Coil in the demo, a trampoline for height and skips.

Which chip set should I use on Twinkle Girl?

Survival if you are learning, attack if you want to shorten fights, no-support if you want the classic exam. Details in the chip set ranking.

Do Proto Man and Mega Man share chips?

Official text says both heroes install Custom Chips. Exact overlap is unlisted. Start with Proto Man if you need kit differences rather than shop differences.
